Crime and violence are perhaps the most important problems that Latin American and Caribbean countries and cities are facing today. Therefore, LACEA creates a new network geared toward these issues in order to promote research by offering academics a consistent meeting where they can discuss their work with their peers on these issues.

AL CAPONE  aims at bringing together efforts by Latin American and Caribbean economists from other parts of the world doing research on the determinants and consequences of crime and violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. The target is to give special emphasis to research on this topic that uses state-of-the-art techniques in order to advance the knowledge on the economics of crime in the region. Also, one of the key objectives of the network is to promote discussion and exchanges between policymakers and researchers, in an attempt to generate positive feedbacks between policy and new academic research. Finally, the network will help in the consolidation of data sources on crime and violence by promoting meetings between different crime observatories across the region.

AL CAPONE Network head is Juan vargas (Universidad del Rosario).

LACEA has established itself as the leading association of economists interested in the problems of economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. We have contributed to strengthening ties between the research community and economic decision makers in the region and we have fostered debate and dissemination of better economic and social policies based on economic research. Yet, during the last few years, we struggled to find a permanent sponsor, who would help us maintain these activities. Therefore, we kindly ask you to help us make LACEA financially sustainable for the years to come. Please take one minute to donate. Every contribution counts. Thank you!
