VI Meeting of the Network on Inequality and Poverty (NIP)
Las Pueblas, Mexico, October 8, 2003
The sixth meeting of the
LACEA/IDB/WB Network on Inequality and Poverty (NIP) will be held
in Puebla, Mexico, at the Universidad de las Americas, on October
8th, 2003, back to back with the LACEA Eight Annual Meeting also
to be held in Puebla, October 9-11, 2003.
The NIP is an initiative that aims to advance the state of
knowledge and expertise regarding the causes and consequences of
poverty, inequality, and social exclusion, as well as the whole
range of policies, institutions, and social structures that
influence their dynamics, as well as the impact of public action.
The sixth meeting of the NIP will be jointly organized with the
World Bank, which will present its flagship report on inequality
on October 7th. At the meeting, the World Bank report will be
discussed. Contributions are invited on the macroeconomic,
microeconomic and institutional aspects of poverty and inequality,
particularly related to Latin America and the Caribbean.
Suggested topics include but are not limited to:
The distribution of assets.
* Physical wealth, credit access, human capital and social capital
inequalities.
* Endowments, prices and income distribution.
Institutional arrangements and inequality of opportunities.
* Property rights, economic reforms and inequality.
* Social rights, distributive policies and equality of
opportunities.
Second generation reforms and inequality.
* Distributive lessons from past reforms for future institutional
changes.
* Inequality and a new wave of economic reforms: opportunities and
limitations.
The meeting program will include a keynote address, and six or
seven papers selected on the basis of academic merit, each with a
formal discussant. Submitted papers will be reviewed by a program
committee, which includes members of the Executive Committee of
the Network. Abstracts should be sent by July 1st, 2003, final
papers should be sent by July 15th, 2002. Authors chosen to
present papers will be notified through email on August 18th,
2003. Strict compliance with these deadlines is required.

The NIP may partially finance travel expenses of those
participants who are not able to obtain complete financial support
from their institutions.
