Call for
Papers
V Meeting of the Network on Inequality and Poverty (NIP)
Madrid, Spain, October 10, 2002
The fifth
meeting of the LACEA/IDB/WB Network on Inequality and Poverty
(NIP) will be held in Madrid, at the Banco de España, on October
10, 2002, back to back with the LACEA Seventh Annual Meeting also
to be held in Madrid, October 11-13, 2002.
The NIP is an
initiative that aims to advance the state of knowledge and
expertise regarding the causes and consequences of poverty,
inequality, and social exclusion, as well as the whole range of
policies, institutions, and social structures that influence their
dynamics, as well as the impact of public action.
Contributions
are invited on the macroeconomic, microeconomic and institutional
aspects of poverty and inequality, particularly related to Latin
America and the Caribbean. Suggested topics include but are not
limited to:

Infrastructure and its impact over inequality (or equality) of
income and opportunities
- Economic
reforms and their impact on inequality and poverty
-
Institutional arrangements for fighting poverty and inequality
(decentralization, delivering services to the poor, etc)
- Indigenous
populations and equality of opportunities
-
Privatization and its impact on welfare
- Social
exclusion related to gender
- Implications
of the Millenium Development Goals
The meeting
program will include a keynote address, and eight or nine papers
selected on the basis of academic merit, each with a formal
discussant. Submitted papers will be reviewed by a program
committee, which includes François Bourguignon, Francisco
Ferreira, Nora Lustig, Juan Pablo Nicolini, and members of the
Executive Committee of the Network. Abstracts should be sent by
July 1st, 2002, final papers should be sent by July 15, 2002.
Authors chosen to present papers will be notified through email on
August 16, 2002. Strict compliance with these deadlines is
required.

partially finance travel expenses of those participants who are
not able to obtain complete financial support from their
institutions.
