National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) presents the
InterAmerican Seminar on Economics (IASE)
Cambridge, Massachusetts, July 14, 2003
On July 14th, 2003, the NBER's InterAmerican Seminar on Economics
(IASE) will have a one-day meeting in Cambridge.
The meeting - which is part of the Bureau's Summer Institute -
will deal with "The Aftermath of Debt Restructuring and Debt
Default in Emerging Countries." We are interested in papers that
analyze the causes and consequences of debt restructuring and
defaults. We are particularly interested in papers that discuss
the costs associated with restructuring and default, and the
different strategies followed by crises countries to get out of
them.
Some of the specific issues we are interested on include: (1) SDRM
and broadly the role of international institutions for lending and
handling of bankruptcy procedures; (2) the microeconomic costs of
default and restructuring; (3) international evidence on defaults;
(4) episodes of low cost (or costless) defaults; (5)
"reconstruction" policies in the aftermath of defaults; (6) and
the political problems associated with the economic collapse of
the defaults.
Papers do NOT have to be restricted to the Latin American
experience. In fact, we would like to encourage submissions that
deal with other experiences.
The NBER will pay transportation and hotel costs for up to 4 days
to participants in the meeting. During the rest of the week,
participants are expected to attend the IFM meetings.
Please
send proposals electronically (either paper or abstract) to
Roberto Rigobon (rigobon@mit.edu)
and Sebastian Edwards (sedwards@anderson.ucla.edu),
before April 15th, 2003.
