1997 Election Results announced October 3, 1997 at the Bogota Meetings hosted by Fedesarrollo
During April and May, 1997, a nominating committee headed by Carmen Diana Deere worked hard to assemble a strong field of eleven candidates to fill five open slots on the executive committee and elect a new Vice President. Under LACEA's bylaws, the Vice-president becomes President after serving two years. Thus, in 1997, Albert Fishlow's term as President of LACEA ended, and Nora Lustig became President after previously serving as Vice-president.
In August 1997, over 400 ballots were sent by mail and e-mail to LACEA members and conference participants. In all, 72 ballots--52 email and 20 mail or fax-were returned to the Treasurer for tabulation before the September 30th deadline. All but two ballots had names attached, ruling out multiple voting. The results were as follows.
Elected Vice President:
Guillermo Calvo
Elected to the Executive Committee:
Nancy Birdsall, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Mauricio Cardenas, Fedesarrollo
Jaime Ros, University of Notre Dame and Kellog Institute
Carlos A. Vegh, University of California Los Angeles
Mariano Tommasi, Universidad de San Andrés, Argentina
Congratulations to the winners of LACEA's first election. The nominating committee did an excellent job in selecting a strong field of candidates. No candidate received less than 35% of the votes. However, each of the top five captured about 60% of the votes which makes the outcome of the election clear. Although subject to final approval of the executive, the following schedule for future elections was proposed by Nora Lustig.
